I suppose this is a nihilistic point of view, but there is truth to this. "Progress" alludes to some sort of end goal. With politics as it is, politicians typically want what is best for them and the near future when they will be alive. What the world will be like in a hundred years has little meaning to them. Carousel riders think very little of the future when they have the power. Psychopaths and narcissists focus primarily on themselves and their immediate pleasures.

We need to overcome this. Just living in the now will strip us of our humanity and we will lose our purpose in life. Establish yourself as having a purpose, whether it be through our work, our family, or our personal interests. Do good to them around you, and you will find satisfaction in life.

And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

 There is good and bad in this world, and to find happiness in life, we need to progress toward the good. Otherwise, we may just end up like this psychopath.
