WB Archives 20180122 - Whatcha Gotta Do

Gotta Do What You Gotta Do

Saturday morning was a rough one for me. My intentions on Friday were good, my planning was good and everything was set to be a nice early night. Somehow, however, way more alcohol than I had expected found its way from a bottle into my blood stream. Some form of chicanery no doubt. Possibly poltergeist.

When I woke up Saturday morning the very last thing I wanted to do was get dressed and walk to the gym, put in time on the weights, put in time on the stairs and do a yoga class.

Tempting, but zero gains are being made.

I had a very warm and very inviting bed along with a thoroughly installed hangover. There would have been no better feeling than having a glass of water and passing back out. However, this was not to be.

I got my clothes on, put my gear together and made it to the gym. With enough caffeine and determination, I hit the floor and worked my way through my sets. It didn’t start out very well, but it began to pick up. By the end of my lifting, I felt like a total beast. After that was the cardio. Intervals on the stair climber. Sure enough, 20 minutes in the hangover started coming back.

Wanting to do something and doing it are two very different things

The easiest thing in the world would have been to hit the stop button and say I got some in and that is good enough. But I am not working to get a “good enough” physique. If you want to look unnatural, you have to train unnatural. So instead of stopping I picked up the pace so I was running on the stairs. When I was done, I looked like a wet mop.

After this was a vinyasa yoga class. Vinyasa is a more athletic yoga. Again, missing this class would have been just fine by me. When the class was finally over, I felt like total shit, but something really great happened. As I was walking from the yoga studio, through the gym and to the stairs that lead to the lockers a sense of accomplishment overcame me. The truth of the matter is that you just have to get in there and put in the work no matter how you feel. Problems at home? Put in the work. Problems at the office? Put in the work. Hangover? Broken toe? Cock and balls black and blue? Hit by lightning? PUT IN THE FUCKING WORK.

I set a Saturday fitness goal and stuck to it despite every incentive not to. If I didn’t, no one would say a word. I was under no external responsibilities to meet this goal. Still, there I was. After a long shower I felt totally refreshed.

Not hangover friendly

I had a chat with JNYX about this. We are only starting week two and already there is a sense of being sore all the time. Putting in the work isn’t easy. Like Ronnie says “everyone wants to be a bodybuilder, but nobody wants to lift no heavy ass weights.” Ronnie is right. The work that Team WB Fitness puts in is not baseline I want to get healthy work. I tell the guys I train that I fully intend to make a gods or corpses of them. We put it on the line. It is going to be exhausting. It is going to be painful and there will be times when we flat out don’t want to do it. What I told JNYX was to remember the hard days in the gym when you didn’t want to go because in a few months when some doughy fuck eating fried chicken for lunch tells you how “lucky” you are to be in shape you can think of what you leave on the floor in terms of sweat and blood.

Tell me again how lucky I am.

So guys, let me know below about a time when you didn’t want to go to the gym but made it there and kicked some ass anyway.

In the meantime, I did keep my word on Sunday and spend my time in the gym trying different lifts in the style of 21s. Look this week for a full body burn out I am calling Full Body Blackjack where we hit every single muscle group in a single workout where every lift is a 21.

I promise you guys that this will be one of my most brutal challenge workouts ever. I will put it out there for you guys tomorrow or Wednesday so check back in.
