This cognitive bias helps us feel better about ourselves by adjusting framing to meet a needed level of accomplishment.

Everyone needs to feel good about himself.  If our ability is low or our challenges are great we may subconsciously pick the mental outlook that gives us the emotional state we desire.

This is like a drug; it helps us feel good without solving actual problems.

Either you select against this mindset or the world will select against you.
