This is the eighth entry in a series of articles about preparing Generation Alpha boys for success in life.
Men function in hierarchies by default and knowing how to navigate hierarchies is important both for amiable coexistence and for getting things done.
As such it is important for boys to be given opportunities to participate in robust male hierarchies.
He should have experience in hierarchies of his peers. He should have experience in hierarchies of his elders. When he is older he should have experience in hierarchies of those younger than him.
Every level of the hierarchy has an important role for its members to perform. The alpha is the leader; very important but there is only one at any time. Most boys will perform as grunts or lieutenants.
It is important to know how to be a reliable performer following the directions of others. It is important to know how to handle being at the bottom, handling the tests of other boys in a way that earns respect and a higher position.
Most of us spend little time at the top but sooner or later we will end up in a position of ultimate responsibility. It is good for a boy to have experience with such a position so he has experience setting agendas, coordinating execution, and taking care of his men.
Those boys who are natural leaders should be especially trained on their responsibilities and guided so as not to let their position go to their heads.
As with most things living these skills out in your own life is instructive for your children.
